Wendell and Deadra are uniquely gifted and dedicated to ministry. As brother and sister, their musical talent was nurtured from an early age. In fact they grew up singing with their family and honoring Christ from church to church. The Johnson’s consisted of Mom and her children; and as God would have it SATBB – Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, and Bass was represented by their voices. They soon developed their own unique style. They glorified God by volunteering to sing whenever and wherever they were needed.
During those early years they sang at many AME and Seventh-day Adventist Churches in the Tampa area. Later, as they accompanied their Dad on military assignments, they would sing nationwide. In fact, they were even able to sing in the Philippines when Dad was stationed there. God used them among various churches and types of people. They were a blessing to all who heard them.
Deadra began private voice lessons at the age of 13. The title cut from her CD “Gethsemane” is dedicated to her first voice coach, Jeannette Nelson. She was classically trained by many teachers throughout high school and college. The most significant educator she experienced was Dr. Alma Blackmon. Dr. Blackmon taught Deadra for four years at Oakwood University; and God saw fit to bring them together in Atlanta as she recorded her first CD, ‘Calvary’.
Wendell was selected as one of Florida’s top high school Tenors his sophomore year of high school. In addition, although a minor, was offered a record contract with an R& B company in his freshman year in college. Mom and Dad in their wisdom turned it down. He was most active in music ministry while living in Sacramento, California.
‘Two Hearts’ with Greg Germany and Wendell Johnson became a well known musical entity at concerts, fairs and other venues in the Bay Area and in Sacramento. They wrote many of their selections and five of their joint creative songs can be heard on the CD, “Above the Hills”. Additionally, Wendell was a member of Precious Craft and The Voices of Faith for over 20 years. Wendell became one of their premier soloists, as the choir toured Europe and many states of the USA. His production of HERITAGE is one of their first CDs of Negro Spirituals.
Wendell and Deadra plan for their next project to be a recording of the many duets they have performed together. Because of their unique blend and exchange of melody and harmony, many of these are frequently requested by audiences. With God’s help, they will continue to bless others with their gifts for many years.
